I practice animism, energy medicine and Buddhism, which inspires a lot of my fiction.
>> If’d you’d like a taste of my animist spiritual practices, you can read more about them at my animism site SongBoneStar.
>> And if you’re interested in the Buddhist practices, the best place to start is this course from the Aro gTér Lineage.
I’m the child of a radical atheist/violinist/philosopher/search and rescue pilot who died when I was 21. He also spent some time teaching physics before I was born.
I am also the child of a up and at ’em world traveller who’s been a researcher, proof reader, special education teacher and magazine editor. She is now retired, so she’s busier than ever.
My brother is 3 years younger than me and is currently doing a phd in something AI related that I don’t fully understand. He’s based in Santa Cruz and has two degrees and a masters already, in pyschology, music technology and… something else.
(Can you imagine what our dinner conversations were like growing up?)
I moved at least six times before I turned ten (I lost count!) and attended boarding school from 11 to 16. I was planning to study Philosophy and Theology for my degree, but ill health and then my Dad’s illness skuppered that plan so I did a stint in computer science at my local college.
My Dad died of a brain tumour just after my 21st birthday at the age of 53. After that, my health took a nose dive both physically and emotionally, and only started to get better when I met my teacher and began training in animism. I spent a couple of years travelling the world as I learned from other animists, before returning to the UK and putting down roots with my favourite person, the amazing visionary artist Gabriel Tamaya.
What I read:
Everything? Whatever grabs me, from Austen to Gaiman, from Le Guin to Stephen King, from Harry Potter to Iris Murdoch. I’m eclectic and I don’t like to pick favourites.
I wrote poetry before I started writing stories, it’s how I relax and how I find perspective on things. Currently, I’m really into fantastical poetry and am reading a lot of Goblin Fruit.
