Poems are paintings, where the paints are syllables and sounds instead of colours and textures. Through poems we can bridge the gap between our linear minds and the flow of our souls, transmuting experiences from the mundane into the transcendent.
Poetry heals the wounds inflicted by reason. – Novalis
If I had to give up all my work but for one thing, it would be this – to dance with words in the moment as I dance with bliss…

Where will I find you,
Where can I call you now -
You are not lost, never lost,
never gone -
I feel you still.
Something solid has dissolved,
the space remains,
the feel on my skin still breathes,
the words in my mind still echo.
A universe no less full of you,
In each breath,
So where can I find you now,
Now that you are God -
In the sky when you rain on me,
In the earth when you feed me -
Broken, you are made whole again;
I find you everywhere, dear one,
I find you everwhere.

Wake to the dawn
Moment by moment -
Each filament of light
another crack of consciousness in the mind.
The sea breathes her own rhythm
As the moon dances overhead,
A circle of time, over and over,
over and over,
One night at a time.
Awaken with the rose
In her own timeless moment,
Always in bloom, in the infinite spaciousness,
Always in movement
In her body of light and green and petals that open,
Over and over,
One day at a time.
Seeds for the Future

You have swum this ocean
Four times my life
Now you are fading
What do you take with you that I can’t even imagine?
In my blood are all your answers,
the good and the bad,
all those memories I haven’t seen
that echo through my body
like a shiver through time.
And now that you are fading into twilight,
Your echoes grow more potent
until they sound like waves of rock,
each a gift from memory to your daughters,
Seeds of the future,
Seeds for us to nuture
As you slip from the past
Into timeless now.

Carrying my soft globes
a belly full
I swim the ocean round
I swim between the sky and ground
on the journey that will never end
towards the heart, towards my moonlit start
There is no weight to bear
as I float
I can go with the streaming roads
Or wait in depths of cool
And when I get there it will be
The end of nothing, another destiny
Time washes out
as stars turn
Sparkling fires in broken waves
Beneath I watch from the silent haven
As all things move, within my limbs,
And I am held by everything

Learning to Dance

I once thought to learn
every lesson, clear and sharp,
to catalogue each great step
so as to own them all
and be greater.
I find now the patterns of my life
are turning whirls like falling leaves,
and each step echoes in the others,
and each step is unique.
And I am greatness when I let them pass,
trusting my wandering
as my feet learn to dance.
When I am fleeing…

When I leap out of myself
and the air presses on me
and my heart gapes with effort
and I claw against my falling -
that falling is returning
that pulling, the gravity of my heart, which is love -
the heaviness of me when I am fleeing
is the light of me when I am still.

As I wave away, bathed in glory
My toes are gold
and you are smiling as you go;
My round belly glows upward,
son to sun,
And we in the middle are blessed with their light.

One Heart

I could give you a flower
It would be nothing and everything;
All that I owe you.
We have been walking
along this quiet path;
You have carried me.
I have carried you.
Nothing and everything -
that’s us to each other.
All of us to the other,
And all that we owe.

Between the ends
of the circle string
that impossible gap
that inevitable
irrefutable
soaring
Between the breaths
a heartbeat pause
a freedom to soar
not one or the other
but all

The pull of the tide
Has long been gone.
It is my breath now,
slow, constant -
pulling nothing, only flowing.
That old longing to be
Somewhere other than here,
Somewhere old -
I didn’t even notice it had gone.
And looking for it now, I find
The hole has disappeared;
It’s empty gravity that led me by the heart
Has turned to home,
Living within me.

Where do we come to listen
in this rushing of feet;
Rushing mouths,
And grasping, waving hands -
Where do we come to hear
Those quiet voices from the ground?
Grandpa, Grandma,
Where can you still speak?
My ancient memories of land and dancing feet,
My old call songs of shaking fire,
Where can we meet?
At the table, on the floor,
In bed, in shadows on the wall,
Or at my sacred altars door -
Where do we come to meet?
The questions that are blank or old,
or cold and dead to all but me,
Here I find the answers speak,
Where I may listen, at my feet.

As promised, one of my recent offerings…
One World, Two World
This is a strange sight;
One eye inward,
the other out.
The in-breath like an ocean,
Outward, in the world.
Two worlds in one vision,
and many worlds between;
How can I speak, answer anything at all,
A mystery like this me,
Like this.
More strangely still – like this I know truth,
it’s in the spaces between breaths,
in the paradox of both.
